Nail Fungus is Common in the Elderly, But How Often Does it Affect Children?

Children are sometimes more prone to nail infections because of poor hygiene habits. Fingernails are one of the dirtiest parts of a child’s body and this area is particularly susceptible as an entry point for nail fungus. If children’s nails aren’t kept short, the underside of their nails can contain a reservoir of microorganisms. Children in daycare may be at higher risk for nail fungus.

How do I know if my child has a nail fungus?

Symptoms of nail fungus include brittle, crumbly or ragged nails, nails which are distorted in color or shape (nail may be yellow, green or black), nails that are flat or dull and noticeable pain in or around the nail bed.

The two most common types of nail fungus in children are Dermatophytes and Yeast. Dermatophytes tend to attack the toenails where as Yeast typically attacks the fingernails.

How can it be treated?

Oral medications may be prescribed by a doctor and are sometimes used in conjunction with topical medicated creams or lacquer, which is painted on once or twice a day. Treatment typically takes about six weeks for fingernails and about twelve weeks for toenails. Treatment should be followed through with completely in order to make sure the fungus is completely gone and to avoid the recurrence of it.

There are many treatment options and home remedies online. Though they are not deemed to be particularly unsafe, use with extreme caution and do thorough researches on any product or manufacturer before you spend your money. Make sure whatever you use is safe for children.

How can I prevent future infections?

Make sure your child washes his or her hands often and is drying them thoroughly afterwards. You can avoid future outbreaks of infection by washing the edges of his or her nails with antibacterial soap and oregano oil. Doing this regularly can help prevent future nail fungus from becoming a problem.

Make sure to properly attend to and clean any cuts or open spots on your child’s hands or feet. These are excellent entry points for fungus. Proper nutrition and diet are also key factors to prevention of nail fungus.

Do I need to take my child to the doctor for this?

It’s a good idea to take your child to the doctor so that a sample can be taken from the infected nail. The sample is then sent off to the laboratory to be tested. Once this is completed, the doctor will know exactly which type of fungus your child is infected with and will be able to recommend the right course of treatment.
